Even Ground

I am happy to report that things are going very well. After my last update on his leg, I did end up taking Eli back to Paul to get the leg tightened up a bit and that seemed to do the trick. The leg hasn't fallen off since, and Eli only has to wear one thin sock. He is adjusting quite well and is really back to being his usual wonderful self while wearing his leg.

We have been standing him up a lot more now and he usually seems to enjoy it. The one thing that we have been feeling unsettled about is the fact that his prosthetic leg is still longer than his left leg, so he can't stand without bending his right knee. You can kind of see what I am talking about in this picture:He has to balance the majority of his weight on his left foot and so when he is standing we have to hold him or else he'll quickly fall down. Yesterday we went in to Paul's office to pick up some socks and I talked to him about this. He said he can go ahead and make the lift bigger and so that is what we are going to do. I am going to get another pair of shoes this weekend, drop them off at Paul's next week and then we'll pick them up once the new lift is put in. The current lift is 3/8 of an inch and the new one will be 7/8 of an inch - quite a difference!

Not quite sure why the appropriate lift wasn't put in originally, I guess Paul thought it didn't matter while Eli wasn't walking and that he would grow into the current one. Its not a big deal for me to get another pair of shoes and I would just like Eli to be able to stand on two flat feet - that's the whole point of this! Part of me does worry that a 7/8 of an inch lift is going to be gigantic and be more of a pain than a help, but Paul said it should be fine. The current lift (that I was so upset about/worried about) doesn't seem to be a problem at all, and I just want to try out a lift that is appropriate. So we'll see how it goes.

Other than that, Eli is just growing up so fast and I am getting really emotional about his upcoming birthday. Of course I am so excited for the things that are to come (talking, standing, walking, etc.), but my goodness has the time gone by so fast!

Oh, and he hugs now and I do think that it is the most sweetest thing in all the world :)

  1. Damn, I can't wait to get one his hugs. Yours, too, of course, and Jed's.

    Love you all.

  3. Yay for adjustments!!!! Yay for sweet hugs!!! :D

Ok, as for Chloe's swimming deal. What you see in the picts is a stretchy sleeve cover (we started using them to help with how easily in the summer she rips through her suspension sleeves. they helped A TON with keeping sand out of the inside of her leg! They re from Fred's Legs.com) She does not have a swim leg and is technically NOT supposed to wear her leg swimming. However, this leg was covered and kinda sealed with leather so we said why not? She was kinda worried about taking her leg off to swim this year so we just went for it. But it's not recommended. Ha!! :)

They actually swim better without it prob. Have you heard of Jessica Long? She is a Bi-lateral BK amputee who swims in the Paraolympics and has like a zillion gold medals. She's from around us and uses the same prosthetist we do! Inspiring!!

  4. Wow, it's good to see Eli Standing. As soon as you get his shoe fixed and he gets a little time to get used to two legs the same length, I'll bet he'll be walking!! It's great that his surgery was so early. He is younger now than Emily was when she had her surgery and he has already healed and has his leg! It won't be long now.
