Dr. Woo

Jered and I met with Dr. Woo (http://www.ortho.ufl.edu/pedortho.shtml) , the Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at the University of Florida on Tuesday for our prenatal appointment. It took a while to get this appointment, as Dr. Woo does not like to see people prenatally. I was really looking forward to meeting him and getting some of my questions answered. He did give us some valuable information, but the majority of the discussion was just about general things, b/c until he sees Eli and does x-rays we won't know what we are dealing with. This was obviously expected, so not a big deal.

Anyways, he said that he prefers to do the Symes amputation b/c you get a better fit with the prosthesis, he does the amputation at 6-7 mths and uses a Spica cast to make sure the baby doesn't move the limb or stand/crawl on it. He said usually if the Fibula is completely missing he has done amputation instead of lengthening but its hard to say until he sees the patient. He recommended that we meet with the Prosthetist that he works with at Gainesville Prosthetics (http://www.gainesvilleprosthetics.com) - says he is amazing. Jered and I have an appointment to meet with him (Paul is his name) on August 26th.

So I made an appt. to see him with Eli on November 4th. He wanted to see us back when the baby is 4 weeks old. He said after that he might only see him once before the amputation, assuming that is what we do. So it sounds like after that November 4th appt. we should know exactly what the situation is with Eli's right leg and foot. Its good to have that date to look forward to.
