Last Tuesday Jered and met with Paul, the Prosthetist at Gainesville Prosthetics. We really liked him and it was reassuring to find out more about him and his experience with children. He used to work at a Shriner's hospital in Philadelphia and then was working at Shands hospital in Gainesville before opening his own practice. He makes all of the prostheses on-site and showed us all around.
We did talk to him about Shriners in Tampa and he definitely recommended that we go there to check it out and get a second opinion. He told us that the Tampa Shriners is the biggest in the country!
We are still at the point where we have to do a lot of research about the different legs, but he mentioned that until a child is around 3 years old there are not that many options; that there is basically one type of leg that he would use. Regarding the different types of amputation, he did say that he would definitely recommend the Symes amputation.
He recommended some resources to us; his own website O and P and the Amputee Coalition of America.
As we were sitting in the waiting room reading one of the ACA's brochures we were overwhelmed by the following statistic, " Over 1,000 Americans are born each year with limb differences." 1,000!!! Are you kidding me? Out of all the babies that are born each year, why God did our baby have to be one of the 1,000? I pray that I get an answer to that question in this lifetime.
Not sure why my links aren't working. I added them to the Link section on the right of the blog. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong, let me know. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI think FH is 1 out of every 500,000 births!!!When I found myself thinking "why us", I had to start thinking "why not us, we can do it!"
ReplyDeleteNot long now
We were told 1 out of 60,000 babies are born with FH. I think they really don't know and are just wildly speculating! I think everyone goes through the 'why us' stage, I know I did, but somehow you get through it! Yep not long now, you must be getting very excited!
ReplyDeleteHello Kristina. My name is Matt and I work in the Medical Research Department at the International Headquarters for Shriners Hospitals for Children, which is also in Tampa and about 20 or so minutes away from our hospital. If there is anything that you need or if I can put you in contact with someone, please let me know!

ReplyDeleteas far as the question, "why you?"...i surely don't have any answers...i myself have my own questions about my Chloe but I have a God who is bigger than all my questions and perhaps one day we might SEE some answers...until then we just hold on tight to Him!
