Level 2

Last Tuesday, May 13th we went for our Level 2 ultrasound. Dr. Richards performed the ultrasound and learned that our baby has fibular hemimelia. His right femur is a bit shorter, he is missing his right fibula and might be missing his 5th metatarsal on his right foot (its not club foot). The next step is to meet with Dr. Woo, a pediatric orthapedic surgeon at Shands (the University hospital) who has written articles on this condition. He'll be able to tell us more, but we won't know the full picture until he is born. There are two treatments, amputation below the knee and limb lengthening. Everything else looks fine. There was a little bit of extra fluid on his right kidney, but Dr. Richards is really not worried about that. I'll go back at 34 weeks for another Level 2 ultrasound to monitor the kidney and see the progress of the leg. They hope the difference in the femur length continues to be marginal.

We met with a genetic counselor and they told us that this is just a freak thing, not genetic. They have no reason to believe that future children would have this condition.

We are doing okay, and just continue to be hopeful and positive.

We are so very thankful for all of the support and prayers. I really believe that our baby will be okay.
